Train driver, footballer, singer and now palaeontologist could be added to this list of ‘When I grow up’ occupations. In the last few years palaeontology, the study of fossils, has evolved from a profession people know little about to regular leisure viewing on mainstream TV. The field of palaeontology is incredibly diverse, every living organism is specialised in from dinosaurs to fossil insects and snails. Natural history is often a passion from a very early age for palaeontologists. There are two main routes in; the first is professional, a degree in palaeobiology, geology, zoology, botany, or any subject that lends itself to palaeontology. From here you can move into fieldwork, museums, or do a masters in micropalaeontology the study of microscopic fossils and work for the oil industry. Alternatively, amateur palaeontologists come in through the back door by working on digs and selling any fossils. Palaeontologists earn different levels of wages depending what role they work in. However, work for the media can bring in extra capital. But palaeontologists just starting out are paid very little how much money do paleontologist make a year there is intense competition. An army of amateur palaeontologists will also willingly volunteer, and work for free on digs. There is immense scope for travel to do field work. Each trip offers fresh opportunities for discoveries and there is enjoyment and freedom in concentrating on your own specific research. International conferences also involve travel and give palaeontologists the chance to keep on top of new developments and research. Travel across the world is great but the tropical diseases you can pick up along the way are not so enjoyable.

How exactly do paleontologists make money self. Well it depends on what they are doing. Many are professors at a university and are paid that way, some are employed for museums. Others are commercial paleontologists that make their money from selling things, like the Black Hills Institute. Others still are «freelancers» who make money by selling books and other forms of media, or giving talks, or consulting for documentaries, etc. Such freelancers would generally have established careers through universities or museums, even if they are no longer with these institutions. Calling commercial fossil hunters paleontologists is a bit disingenuous given that paleontology is a field of science and science consists of analyzing data and publishing research, not selling finds for profit. Ideally, commercial fossil hunters would take detailed notes and publish those on each of the specimens before selling it but it still is a stretch to say they’re scientists. I should be fair and say that I’ve purchased from fossil dealers, but only from reputed fossil and mineral stores. I’ve also spoken to them about their work and several of them have been associated with universities and programs in the past. That isn’t how science works. Research pieces are stored in repositories so that future researchers have access to those pieces. Selling fossils to private entities essentially renders them scientifically useless. Just because a fossil is in private hands does not make it useless for science. Depends on what you need to do with them. You certainly can do science without the physical specimen. We knew a fair bit about Spinosaurus aegypticus even though Ernst Stromer’s specimen was not intact because of his meticulous notes and photographs. We could then compare Dr. Ibrahim’s Spinosaur specimen. Many museum collections rely on private collections being donated. There is without a doubt a large role that private collectors have played to forward paleontology and are not «scientifically useless». There was nothing useless about the recent dinosaur tail trapped in amber find.
Years of Experience
Having a doctoral education in the field, paleontologists may perform fieldwork looking for fossils, teach or do research at a university or curate fossils at a museum. They use their expertise and skills to connect fossils to the history of life on Earth. If you like natural science and find it fascinating to dig up and study fossils to learn about how animals and plants have changed over time, being a paleontologist can be a good fit and allow you to work in a variety of settings. Although a paleontologist’s salary will vary based on the role, location and experience, there is the potential to earn a generous salary. Fieldwork often requires you to be away from your family, but you can find more family-friendly options working in museums and universities. Paleontologists focus their studies on fossils and try to connect them to different points in history to learn more about the Earth’s history and evolution. Depending on where they work, they may dig up fossils in the field, do research on fossils in a university, classify fossils at a museum, teach classes about paleontology or assist oil and gas professionals with finding natural resources based on where remains are found. Those who work in the field may spend a lot of time outside in the elements, so knowing how to stay safe and survive outdoors is helpful. Paleontologists also benefit from being physically strong to endure long periods of moving around outdoors collecting fossils and having the skills needed to solve problems and think critically. Paleontologists generally need to earn a relevant doctoral degree in paleontology, geology or a related field. This can take six to eight years of total study from when you enter college. To prepare for a graduate program, you can take undergraduate courses in geology, chemistry, statistics, zoology, paleontology, mineralogy, biology and other areas as well as learn to read foreign languages, such as French. Having fieldwork and research experience is helpful for finding a job after you graduate, and you may seek internship or volunteer work at museums or universities to get some experience.

Paleontologists study fossils found in geological formations to determine the ages of plants, micro-organisms, animals and ancient civilizations. Dating of fossils is derived from the ages of rock layers above and below the fossils in a process called radiometric dating, according to the University of California Berkeley. While many paleontologists work in museums and college research labs, some help recover fossils in the coal and oil industries. Salary and Qualifications. The U. Bureau of Labor Statistics categorizes paleontologists as geoscientists, which also includes geologists, geochemists and seismologists. To succeed in their field, paleontologists must be knowledgeable about many different sciences, including biology, chemistry, geology and physics. Other essential requirements include math, critical-thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal, speaking, writing and computer skills. Salary by State. They also earned relatively high salaries in Texas and Washington, D. Salary by Industry. Besides experience and geographic area, the industry in which paleontologists work also dictates their earnings. Job Outlook. Ysar BLS indicates that jobs for geoscientists, including paleontologists, will increase 21 percent in the next decade, which is faster than yer 14 percent growth rate for all jobs. Many job opportunities for paleontologists will be spurred by the demand for responsible land and resource management. A large number of geoscientists and paleontologists are also expected to retire within the next 10 years, which should produce jobs for new entrants in the field. Source: www.
